Introducing the Revised Nyungwe National Park Fees for 2024-2025

Introducing the Revised Nyungwe National Park Fees for 2024-2025

Nyungwe National Park Fees Have Been Revised— Nyungwe National Park will implement new tourism pricing on January 1, 2023, with a review occurring every two years. This modification is the result of the mandate that Nyungwe administration Company (NMC) was granted in October 2020 to oversee the park’s administration in its entirety, more than a decade after the last update. The current pricing structure, which will be maintained until the end of 2022, will be revised to accommodate the changing requirements of the tourism and hospitality industries in the vicinity of Nyungwe.

The formulation of an inclusive Tourism Development Plan (TDP) that would guide all tourism and hospitality initiatives in the region has been a critical priority under the leadership of NMC. The TDP is the source of the proposed pricing adjustments for 2023, which are based on the anticipated improvements in tourism offerings and accommodations. At present, nationals constitute approximately 35% of Nyungwe’s visitors. The objective is to increase the proportion of national visitors to a minimum of 50%, with an additional 15-20% of residents. This will be achieved through the implementation of a revised pricing strategy and the enhancement of facilities. The 2023 pricing structure is designed to promote extended stays by charging increased entry fees for the first day or night and lowering fees for subsequent stays.

Structure of Entry Fees
The park has recently implemented entry fees that are contingent upon the duration of the visitor’s stay and the category of the visitor. It is important to note that entry fees will not be applicable to travelers who are spending more than three days, but up to one week.

Adults who are citizens of Rwanda or the East African Community (EAC) will be charged USD 10 (RWF 10,000) per individual for a one-day/night visit, USD 15 (RWF 15,000) for two nights, and only USD 20 (20,000) for a three-night stay. For stays of 1, 2, and 3 nights, children aged 6-12 will be charged half the adult rate, while children under the age of 6 will have complimentary access.

For a one-night visit, foreign residents in Rwanda or the East African Community will be charged USD 60 per person, USD 90 for two nights, and USD 120 per person for three nights. Rates are reduced by half for minors between the ages of six and twelve. The same tariffs are applicable to citizens of African countries that are not part of the East African Community.

For a one-day/night visit to Nyungwe Forest National Park, international visitors will be charged USD 100 per person. For a two-day visit, the fee is USD 150 per person, and for a three-night visit, the fee is USD 200 per person. These rates will be halved for children between the ages of six and twelve.

Fees for Chimpanzee Tracking
The cost of chimpanzee tracking at Nyungwe Forest National Park is contingent upon the category of visitor. International visitors will be charged USD 150 per individual per trek, while EAC forest residents will be charged USD 75, and Rwandan or EAC citizens will be charged USD 25.

Nyungwe National Park provides visitors with the opportunity to engage in special activities, including primate excursions, birding, hiking, and canopy walks, each with its own fee structure. These activities are designed to provide visitors with distinctive experiences that exceed the standard entry requirements.

Participation in canopy walks, primate excursions (excluding chimpanzee trekking), forest birding, and hiking will incur a USD 5 fee for Rwandan or East African Community (EAC) citizens. International visitors will be charged USD 40, while foreign residents in the EAC will be charged USD 20.

Option for an annual pass
Multiple entries to Nyungwe Forest National Park are granted over the course of one year by selecting an annual permit. Rwandan or EAC citizens may acquire an individual/single pass for RWF 95,000 or a couple pass for RWF 150,000. Alternatively, families consisting of two adults and two children may obtain a permit for RWF 205,000.

The single pass is priced at USD 300 for foreign residents in the EAC, while the couple and family passes are priced at USD 500 and USD 800, respectively.

Porters’ and guides’ fees
A half-day activity is defined as the number of hours that guides and attendants are employed from the park reception before 9:00 a.m. and are expected to return within five hours. If the item is collected after 9:00 a.m., a full day’s fee will be levied, unless it is returned before midday. Guides who accompany visitors on multi-day walking trails are subject to an additional charge of 15,000 RWF, which includes accommodation and food for a maximum of three nights. In the same vein, porters who participate in multi-day treks are required to pay an additional 15,000 RWF for accommodation and sustenance, with an additional 5,000 RWF per night.

In order to guarantee the welfare of visitors and the effective dissemination of information, it is mandatory to have a guide for every eight tourists (excluding children under the age of 5).

Structure of Entry Fees
Trails accessible within Nyungwe National Park are included in the entry charge. Day visitors are charged per entry, while overnight visitors are charged per night spent within the park. The fee is reduced by 50% for the second and third nights and is waived for the subsequent nights, up to one week. Children under the age of five are admitted free of charge, while those aged six to twelve are subject to activity fees. The entry fee for each day of entrance is charged to visitors who are not staying in the park, unless they are residing in approved park-affiliated lodgings.

Nyungwe Management Company, in collaboration with the Rwanda Development Board, has announced the revised tourism pricing, which will be effective on January 1, 2023. This initiative is designed to streamline the pricing process for visitors, ensuring that it is consistent with adjacent parks and that it encourages extended guest stays without substantial cost increases.

The introduction of an accessible park entry fee, annual pass options, and facilitation for domestic visitors are among the tourism offerings that have been improved. Furthermore, novel activities, including zip line courses and multi-day walks, are being implemented.
