Tour the Musanze Caves

Embark on an enchanting adventure to explore the Musanze Caves, fascinating geological formations located at the foothills of Volcanoes National Park in northwestern Rwanda. This exploration not only deepens your understanding of their formation and history but also introduces you to the wildlife within, especially the bats. The caves stretch for about 2 kilometers and, for centuries, served as cover and protection for fighters during wars. They also played a significant role as sites for crowning new kings.

A guided tour of the Musanze Caves usually lasts between 2 and 2.5 hours. With at least 31 entrance points, visitors walk on paved floors and stairways that make exploration smoother. Inside, the caves remain dark and tranquil, with only faint rays of sunlight filtering through. You will need a headlamp to navigate safely and capture excellent photographs. The cool atmosphere, combined with the squeaking and chirping of bats, adds an air of mystery and otherworldliness.

Most tours begin at around 7:00 a.m., with arrivals made through Musanze. To participate, visitors must be at least 12 years old and hold a valid permit issued by the Rwanda Development Board. The permits are priced as follows:

  • Foreign non-resident: US$ 50

  • Foreign resident: US$ 30

  • East African foreign resident: US$ 30

  • Rwandan/East African Community citizen: RWF 4,000

It is advisable to secure your permit in advance, especially during peak seasons, to avoid inconveniences.

Best Time to Visit

Although the Musanze Caves are open throughout the year, the best time to visit is during the dry season. Sunshine during these months enhances visibility inside the caves, while drier ground makes hiking and walking more comfortable. The dry seasons typically occur from December to February and from June to August.

How to Get There

You can reach the Musanze Caves from Kigali by road. The journey covers about 96 kilometers northwest of the city and takes approximately 2 to 2.5 hours. Travelers may choose either public or private transport, with private vehicles offering more convenience. Options include 4×4 safari vehicles, saloon cars, minibuses, or other comfortable means depending on budget and preference.

For a faster option, air transport is available. A helicopter flight from Kigali International Airport to Musanze airstrip takes around 30 minutes. From there, visitors can arrange ground transportation to the caves or their accommodation.

Other Activities to Enjoy

A visit to the Musanze Caves can be combined with other exciting activities in Volcanoes National Park, such as:

  • Gorilla trekking – A guided hike into the dense forest to spend one unforgettable hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family. This activity requires participants to be at least 15 years old and physically fit.

  • Golden monkey trekking – Similar to gorilla trekking, but focused on locating habituated golden monkeys. Visitors must be at least 12 years old. Along the way, you may also spot various birds, primates, and mammals.

  • Mount Karisimbi hike – A challenging trek to Rwanda’s highest peak at 4,507 meters above sea level. This adventure rewards hikers with panoramic views and sightings of unique birdlife, primates, and vegetation.

  • Cultural encounters – Engage with the Batwa people, the forest’s former inhabitants. Learn about their traditions, rituals, music, dance, and their role in forest conservation.
