5-Day Luxury Rwanda Wildlife Safari
A 5-Day Luxury Rwanda Wildlife Safari offers an unforgettable journey through two of Rwanda’s most remarkable national parks. This luxury adventure combines thrilling wildlife encounters in Akagera National Park with the once-in-a-lifetime experience of trekking endangered mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. Along the way, you will enjoy breathtaking scenery, exceptional hospitality, and expertly guided excursions that showcase Rwanda’s rich biodiversity and conservation success.
Beginning and ending in Kigali, this safari provides the perfect balance of wildlife viewing, cultural discovery, and relaxation. From searching for the Big Five across vast savannah plains to standing just a few metres away from a family of mountain gorillas in the misty forests, every day promises extraordinary experiences that will leave lasting memories.
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Akagera National Park
Your luxury safari begins upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, where your professional driver-guide warmly welcomes you. Before leaving the capital, enjoy a short tour of Kigali, one of Africa’s cleanest and most beautiful cities. During the tour, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, an important historical site that provides insight into Rwanda’s past and the country’s remarkable journey toward unity and reconciliation.
After the city tour, continue on a scenic drive east to Akagera National Park. The journey takes approximately two and a half hours and passes through picturesque countryside, rolling hills, rural villages, and lush agricultural landscapes that reveal the beauty of Rwanda.
Upon arrival at your luxury lodge, take time to relax while enjoying panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness. Following a delicious lunch prepared with both local and international flavours, set out on your first afternoon game drive.
Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s only savannah national park and is home to an impressive variety of wildlife. During your drive, you may encounter elephants, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, antelopes, and numerous bird species. As the afternoon sun begins to set, the golden light transforms the landscape into a spectacular scene, creating excellent opportunities for photography. Return to your lodge in the evening for dinner and a peaceful overnight stay.
Day 2: Full-Day Safari in Akagera National Park
Wake up early for a full day of wildlife exploration in Akagera National Park. After breakfast, embark on an exciting morning game drive through different habitats, including open grasslands, woodland, wetlands, and lakeshores.
The park has become one of Africa’s greatest conservation success stories after the successful reintroduction of lions and black rhinos. Today, visitors have the opportunity to search for the famous Big Five, including lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards, and rhinos. Along the way, your experienced guide will explain the behaviour of various animals and the conservation efforts that have restored the park’s wildlife populations.
Akagera is equally rewarding for bird enthusiasts. With more than 480 recorded bird species, the park offers excellent birdwatching opportunities. Depending on the season and location, you may spot African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, shoebills, and many colourful savannah birds.
After enjoying lunch and a short period of relaxation, continue your adventure with an afternoon boat cruise on Lake Ihema. This peaceful excursion allows you to observe hippos relaxing in the water, Nile crocodiles basking along the shoreline, and numerous waterbirds feeding in the wetlands. Animals such as elephants, buffaloes, and antelopes frequently visit the lake to drink, creating memorable wildlife viewing opportunities.
As evening approaches, return to your lodge for dinner while reflecting on another rewarding day in the African wilderness.
Day 3: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Following breakfast, enjoy one final morning game drive as you leave Akagera National Park. This early drive offers another chance to spot wildlife that may have remained hidden during previous excursions.
After exiting the park, begin the scenic journey across Rwanda toward Volcanoes National Park. The drive passes through Kigali before continuing northwest into Rwanda’s mountainous region. Along the way, enjoy lunch at a carefully selected restaurant before continuing through beautiful rolling hills, tea plantations, and vibrant rural communities.
You will arrive at your luxury lodge near Volcanoes National Park in the late afternoon or early evening. The cool mountain climate and stunning volcanic scenery create a peaceful atmosphere that contrasts beautifully with the savannah landscapes of Akagera.
Spend the remainder of the day relaxing at your lodge. If time allows, you may take a short guided walk around the surrounding community or enjoy the breathtaking views while preparing for the following day’s gorilla trekking adventure.
Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Today marks the highlight of your luxury Rwanda safari. After an early breakfast, depart for the Volcanoes National Park headquarters with your packed lunch. Upon arrival, you will complete registration before joining fellow trekkers for a briefing conducted by experienced park rangers.
During the briefing, the rangers explain the trekking procedures, safety guidelines, and proper behaviour around mountain gorillas. Once assigned to a specific gorilla family, begin your guided trek through the dense rainforest.
The trek may last anywhere between one and eight hours, depending on the location of the gorilla family on that particular day. Although the hike can sometimes be physically demanding, every step is rewarded by the beauty of the rainforest, where you may encounter colourful birds, butterflies, golden monkeys, and other forest wildlife.
Eventually, you will come face to face with one of the world’s most endangered primates. Spending one unforgettable hour observing mountain gorillas in their natural habitat is an emotional and humbling experience. Watching them feed, groom, play, and interact with one another provides remarkable insight into their close family relationships and gentle nature.
After your unforgettable encounter, return to the park headquarters before driving back to your lodge. Spend the evening relaxing while reflecting on one of Africa’s greatest wildlife experiences.
Day 5: Cultural Experience and Departure
After breakfast, conclude your safari with an enriching cultural experience at a nearby community village. Here, you will discover Rwanda’s rich cultural traditions through traditional dance performances, local music, storytelling, craft making, and demonstrations of everyday village life.
The visit also highlights how tourism supports local communities by creating employment opportunities and encouraging conservation. Learning about the connection between wildlife protection and community development provides a deeper understanding of Rwanda’s sustainable tourism model.
Following the cultural tour, enjoy lunch before beginning your drive back to Kigali. Depending on your flight schedule, your driver-guide will transfer you to Kigali International Airport for your departure.
As your safari comes to an end, you will leave Rwanda with unforgettable memories of incredible wildlife encounters, breathtaking landscapes, welcoming people, and inspiring conservation achievements.
